Learning Vocabulary for Saudi Arabian Students Research Proposal

Learning Vocabulary for Saudi Arabian Students - Research Proposal ExampleFocusing on the methods of teaching the English language, style was disregarded and reduced, while grammar and pronunciation were given more(prenominal) emphasis (Al-Jabri, 2005). According to Harmer (2007), teachers are very unsure of how to determine a suitable method of teaching English because of the variety of different approaches and methods available. They can gradually, with experience, create their own method of teaching. This could be the most appropriate method they can use according to the context of use they teach in (Scrivener, 2005). Students usually choose a low-effort strategy when they are required to do a task (Krashen, 1987). They seem to prefer translation of pertly vocabulary rather than getting their meanings from the contexts or from doing pair-works (Prince, 1996). It is significant to shed light on the effectiveness of the English teaching methodologies in order to increase the s ense of English teachers to re-evaluate their teaching methods, considering the applicability of these methods on the social and cultural situations. Based on my teaching experience, therefore, I propose to investigate whether the Grammar- Translation method is more effective than CLT approach at the vocabulary level.Much has been said and talked about the traditional ways of teaching. One of the ways is the Grammar Translation regularity which dates back to the 17th, 18th, and nineteenth centuries when foreign language learning was associated with the learning of Latin and Greek. In the process of teaching and learning English, translation is used in the Grammar Translation Method. According to Boey (1970) the assimilator is first required to learn the vocabulary lists consisting of L2 words and its equivalent L1 words. L1 is used to teach the grammatical rules of L2. Thereafter, practice exercises are given to students where they have to translate the L1 sentences into L2 senten ces by applying the grammatical rules to the vocabulary learnt. On the opposite hand, the of import aim of the Communicative Language Approach (CLT) is to produce churn out students who are communicatively competent. In this method, the teacher first gives a presentation and thereafter, students are made to use the language through activities, such as games, role plays and problem solving tasks. (Larsen, 1987)According to Maleki (2005), the main purpose of these two languages - GTM and CLT was to promote the intellectual skills of its speakers. Therefore, it was extremely important to focus on sentence structure, grammatical rules, learning of vocabulary and translation of literary texts. The other method which is now more prevalent for teaching is the Communicative Language Approach. Wen Wu (2008) stated that Communicative Language Approach is mainly based on the idea that the primary function of language use is communication. According to Al-Shabbi (1994), due to its emphasis on f luency over accuracy approach, the Communicative Language Method has not paid much attention to spelling in the EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classroom.Even the great appeal of Communicative Language statement has not been able to overcome the psychological barriers which becomes a hindrance in the learning process. Though its unfortunate, that CLT is quite in use,

Contrast the Power of Chief Justice Roberts Jr. with that of an Essay

Contrast the Power of Chief Justice Roberts Jr. with that of an Associate Justice like Kennedy - Essay ExampleHowever, in toll of power and influence during oral arguments and Friday conference, all justices of the US Supreme Courts have represent voices and equal ballots. Undeniably, during oral arguments and Friday conference, protocol states that the Chief Justice speaks first, casts his vote first and assigns the lay asider of the Courts assurance if he is with the majority. All these privileges are in deference to his esteemed position. As a matter of fact, the US Supreme Court operates on a system of seniority. With the sole exception of the Chief Justice, the Associate Justices are called to speak and cast their voice on the nucleotide of seniority, that is, the older justices go first. The system of seniority is used only for the purpose of finding order in their procedures and has no bearing on their influence in finish-making (US Courts). In terms of influence on the outcome of the case which is under oral argument or discussion during Friday conference, all Justices have the same and equal votes. The Chief Justice is just one vote out of the nine Justices that make up the US Supreme Court. There is not one Justice, not even the Chief Justice, who has more influence and more value to their votes than the others. 2. ... A Justice from the majority group is then assigned to write the opinion of the court. When it is at long last promulgated, the majority opinion forms part of the jurisprudence and may be used as precedence for future cases. By their very nature, only the majority opinion affects the actual case law and policy impact that arise out of the promulgated decision. Justices from both the winning majority and the losing minority are all uncaring to write their own opinions which shall also form part of the promulgated decision. Those who agree with the majority opinion write concurring opinions while those who disagree with the majori ty write dissenting opinions. Interestingly, dissenting opinion gives us a glimpse of the dynamics that occurred in the course of the deliberation of the case. Although the opinion has no weight on the decision and does not confer rights to the parties in the case, justices write them anyway to register their disagreement with the majority. In rare occasions, dissenting opinion bring abouts the majority opinion because the other Justices become convinced with the dissenters argument after reading the dissenting opinion (US Courts). 3. Compare the Superior courts with the US District Court in terms of their purpose(s). What difference(s) did you notice in your study? What do you make of this? The federal court system has three levels of courts in its hierarchy and each level has a diverse stated purpose. The three federal courts are the US District Courts, the US Circuit Court of Appeal and the Supreme Court. The US District Courts are the outpouring courts which hear cases under its original jurisdiction. It has authority to hear both civil and criminal cases. Parties who are not

In this regard, let us firstly take a closer look at the plot, themes, and symbols in the Gilmans story, which depicts the decent of its heroine into madness, and secondly try to establish links between The Yellow Wallpaper and the concepts developed by Jacques Lacan. One of the chief themes of The Yellow Wallpaper relates to the completely inadequate attitude of the husband to his wife, a charr that apparently has a depressed condition afterwards having given a birth to a child and who is the main protagonist of the short novel. The plot of The Yellow Wallpaper is told to readers through the eyes, or more exactly through the private diary writings, of the heroine of the story, who after a nervous breakdown that we can associate with the so called postpartum depression, which may happen with new mothers right after the birth of a child, has been in essence isolated from the external world in a roomy and so long untenanted (Gilman 1892) mansion by the whim of her husband trick. John is a physician who allegedly knows what is needed for his wife to get better as he is saying to her You know the place is doing yo u good (Gilman 1892). Moreover, as the woman observes

Research Argument - Essay ExampleAdmittedly the various crimes for which execution was the verdict have been brought down(p) in recent times. Also the methods of execution (quartering, boiling, and impaling to name a few) have been made less barbaric in the recent years. However whether death penalisation should be allowed a place in our law at all is a much debated point. Two thirds of the countries around the world have completely abolished swell punishment for any crime. Many countries have even abolished it as late as 2008 Uzbekistan for one did so on 1st January 2008. The European Union is likewise firm in its stand against death penalization. Currently though 60 countries retain the use of the same for certain crimes like premeditated murder date others retain death penalty but have not executed anyone within a span of 10 years (Death penalty emancipationist and Retentionist countries). The United States has been under fire from various fronts regarding the large number o f executions since 1976, the year during which death penalty was reinstated in the country. The support in the nation against death penalty is steadily on the rise.Yet there is a strong belief among quite a large population that the only punishment fit for a person who has taken the life of another is death itself and no less. A legal scholar, writes, Abolitionists appear to value the life of a convicted murderer or, at least, his non-execution, to a greater extent highly than they value the lives of the innocent victims who might be spared by deterring prospective murderers. (van den Haag). In certain cases like that of Timothy McVeigh, where the convict shows no compunction for his heinous crimes it seems like death penalty is the only fitting verdict that can be pronounced. Timothy McVeigh was sentenced to death and executed on 11 April 2006 for the besiege on a federal building in Oklahoma. He was responsible for the death of 168 individuals, including 19

Observation of Teaching English Focusing on Teacher-Student as well as Essay

Observation of Teaching English Focusing on Teacher-Student as well as Student-Student Interactions - Essay ExampleThe projector was on but was never used for the duration of the signifier. Likewise, some students were deemed absent, as observed from the greater number of indolent seats as compared to the first observation period. He talks in a monosyllabic manner that is perceived to be monotonous and students at the acantha would strain to hear the entirety of his discussion. The students posed diverse stances ranging from perceptive, partially responsive as a class, partially attentive (which means there were a few who were really inattentive), somewhat indifferent, and generally unparticipative. Description of Teacher-Student Interactions The professor discussed the days subject matter on the need to examine the context of the sentence by enumerating a point-by-point sentence structure as detailed in their course material. He tried to solicit participation from the student by asking them questions aft(prenominal) relevant points from the course material were presented. Apparently, only one student from Saudi Arabia was virtually responding actively to his inquiries. The rest of the students (predominantly Asian) were either very softly responding in their single seats or silently observing and listening during the whole discussion. At one point where handouts were needed to be disseminated, Saudi students voluntarily stood up and aided in distributing the materials to the other members of the class. As noted, other students (Asian) were not at all participating and one actually saw two students changing seats upon the sustain up of the class discussion and where one student even changed seats twice for some reason. Even worse, some Asian students were also seen sleeping in class (a total of three students) and neither the professor nor the classmates made any efforts to wake them up. The professor either did not see them or was indifferent to studen ts sleeping in his class. Description of Student-Student Interactions Regarding observing student-student interactions, one could deduce that the students are already well acquainted with each other. This acquaintance was observed to have negative effects in terms of exhibiting private conversations and communications with each other, without regard to the professor discussing the lessons. These were actually three (3) Asian students talking to each other while the professor was explaining the lesson in front of the class. A positive student interaction was observed as two (2) Saudi students voluntarily assisted the professor in distributing the handouts. The rest of the schoolroom environment was predominantly silent during the lecture due to absence of reaction and response as well as active participation from the students. Description of Lesson, Activities and assemblage Work The lesson was delivered purely using a lecture approach. Only the course materials were the sole refer ence for the discussion. Despite availability and access to using the overhead projector, it was not at all utilized. Likewise, the soft voice, monotonous manner of speech and communication pattern, as well as being stationary (standing in front of the class) restrict movement, activity, vitality, and diversity in instructional approach and use of instructional materials. At some point in time, about 30 minutes after the start of the

Magic number 1089 Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Magic number 1089 - Research Paper ExampleThe procedure that yields the number 1089 through calculations bearing ternary digit verse involves three basic steps. The first step involves a random selection of a three-digit number, which has the first and last digits having a difference of more than two. Secondly, the digits atomic number 18 reversed, this changes the order of the numbers such that the first one appears as the last and the last as the first. For example, 469 is reversed to become 964. After this, the smaller of the numbers is subtracted from the one that has a big value. From the example above it will be (964-469)= 495. Finally, the number obtained in step two is added to its reverse hence generating the number 1089. In our example, 495+593 yields 1089. This procedure yields this number (1089) still given that the three digit numbers used always have a difference of more than two between the first and the last numbers. To melt down the mystery behind the magic behi nd the mathematical logic we can systematically analyze the calculations. If the three digits in our number are a, b and c respectively then, we establish the three digit number will be given by (100*a) + (10*b) + c. this means that when the number is reversed, it becomes (100*c) + (10*b) + a. Engaging the next step in the calculation which involves a subtraction of the biggest number from the smallest (in this case we can use any of the numbers since we are not certain which letters represents the largest number). (100a+10b+c) (100c + 10b + a) yields 99 (a-c). The logic here is that (a-c) must always be greater than two and definitely not greater than 9. The trick is usually in the predictable numbers that are obtained after the process gets to this level. It is a must that the values of 99 (a-c) should be either 198, 297, 396,495, 594, 693, 792, or 891. Looking carefully at these eight

Commonwealth v Schnopps Case Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Commonwealth v Schnopps Case - Essay ExampleSchnopps was convicted by a jury on murder in the first degree and was thus sentenced to the mandatory term of life imprisonment. On appeal against his conviction, Schnopps argued that the trial enunciate failed to instruct the jury on volunteer manslaughter. The appeal court sided with Schnopps argument and opined that Instructions on voluntary manslaughter must be given if there is present of provocation deemed adequate in law to cause the accused to lose his self-control in the heat of passion, and if the killing followed the provocation before sufficient clock had elapsed for the accuseds temper to cool. (Commonwealth v. Schnopps, p.180) Basing voluntary manslaughter on the theory of provocation implies that an act of killing must have been committed in a sudden transport of passion or heat of blood, upon a reasonable provocation and without malice, or upon sudden combat. (Commonwealth v. Garabedian, (1987) p. 313) The success of Sc hnopps appeal for a conviction of voluntary manslaughter due to provocation establishes the principle that where there is reasonable evidence to show that a defendant had been reasonably provoked and had killed as a result of that provocation, a direction of voluntary manslaughter should be given to the jury. However, as established in Commonwealth v. Schopps, if enough time elapsed after the provocation to enable a cooling of temper, the act of killing could not be defended under the theory of voluntary manslaughter based on provocation.

History of the game Essay Example for Free

History of the game EssayAs the drinks of the game have changed, the style of play has changed accordingly. During the woody salute era, before the flowage of the coat and metal composite rackets, players affect groundstrokes with slight topspin but mostly flat tire or with underspin, particularly on the backhand side. To provide the players with the underspin or flat shots, players strive with an eastern grip (slightly east of the continental style grip achieved by sliding the V area between the thumb and index digit down the side of the frame to the grip) to help generate slice and handle low balls better. Players used this style of play to compensate for the lower bounce produced on grass courts compared to the bounce of hard and clay courts today. In effect, groundstrokes had to be long and fluid with early preparation and a long follow through to bemuse the necessary power and control by swinging the heavier wooden rackets.Players with wooden rackets also stood sid eways to the ball and stepped into the swing to generate more power. Furthermore, the small sweetspot of the wooden racket required players to have more exact, controlled swings instead of the quick, powerful, whip-like swings of todays players. As an example, John McEnroe, a former tennis professional and Grand Slam winner, supports wooden rackets bywordI have been a proponent of the wood racketwood rackets would bring back skill and finesse to the game and would make the points longer and more fun to watch. And I could watch all those young guys cry like that little baby doll that wets herself as they try to return a serve with a 15-ounce blame of lumber. (McEnroe 1).As a result, players could non end the point with a single shot like today and then games consisted of more rallies. The rackets and styles of play have evolved to the twenty-first Century and have dramatically changed the way tennis is played. Instead of the long and fluid groundstrokes used with wooden rackets, l ighter more powerful rackets have create quick, short but powerful swings by tennis players today. The players also use a more western or semi-western grip (achieved by placing the racket on the ground and coming from straight above, picking the racket up with one hand). These grips tend to generate more power and topspin as well make it easier to hit high bouncing balls. This heavy topspin usually causes points to end more quickly with more winners and harder shots. These changes in the game are all in relation to the organic evolution of higher bouncing courts, hard courts and clay courts, and the shorter grass court tournament season. Also, as a result to the more powerful modern rackets, serves were consistently hit over 100 mph and many clocked at more than 120 mph contributing to the quicker points. Furthermore, many serves were unreturnable meaning that it would be almost undoable for players to return or even more to hit the ball with the racket. The change in rackets in th e 20th Century was not only limited to a change in the game but the tennis market was affected as well. According to Edward Tenner, the new rackets were not as profitable for racket manufacturers as the wooden rackets were during the peak in tennis popularity in the early 1970s (Tenner 3). However, shortly following this rapid growth in tennis popularity, tenniss popularity among the common lot started to downfall. According to the records of the Tennis Industry Association, two years before the introduction of the Prince racket in 1974, the number of tennis players reached its peak and then started a decline (Tenner 1).Later, the sale of tennis balls was evaluated and showed a drop in tennis ball usage between 1990 and 1993 (Tenner 3). A short explanation of this event could be that players were not ready to pay the higher price for newer metal rackets. The modern rackets, costing about $150, were much more expensive compared to the lower price of wooden rackets in the early 1970 s. However, the introduction of the modern rackets produced a larger selection of varying rackets for tennis consumers shown in the following excerpt from Tennis Magazine, To play your best tennis, your racket has to complement your game. And with more frames than ever being designed for specific types of players, finding that magic wand has never been easier. (2001 Racket Guide 1)In addition, modern rackets are designed for all different types of players including strictly baseliners to serve and volleyers. Mark Macky, Dunlops director of racket sports, shows this in the following statement, Its no longer enough to make a racket for one ability level beginner, intermediate, advanced. Today, companies make rackets that are targeted to specific styles of play. A serve and volleyer, for example, will want a different type of racket than a baseliner. (2001 Racket Guide 1) Although while racket manufacturers may have suffered from the introduction of modern rackets, consumers seem to b enefit.According to New York Times newspaper, the new metal rackets prove to last longer and need restringing less often saving consumers money (Tenner 3). Furthermore, metal rackets can last up to ten years or more contrary to the wooden rackets that were damaged by age, warping, and cracking. In conclusion, although many tennis professionals believe that wooden rackets would increase the charisma of tennis, there is undeniable examine that proves modern rackets to be better for the game and all levels of players.Newer rackets provide more options for tennis players, giving them more power and control than ever before therefore elevating the level of play in the game of tennis. They also appeal to lower levels of players making the game easier to learn and in effect, better for everyone. In addition, although the market seemed to be falling, it is currently rising for the game of tennis and showing this, the U.S. Open has had more viewers in the year of 2001 than ever before in the history of the game.

Mix Racial and Cultural Groups Are Growing in the United States Essay Example for Free

Mix Racial and Cultural Groups Are Growing in the united States EssayMixed Racial and Cultural Groups is change magnitude by a marginal number in the United States. The gain of these multiracial groups started to surface through migration of different ethnics and raised most of their families in the United States even through marriage. These are some of the trims that have been raised by individual mint of having an entity separation of mixed race and cultural or to considered them as Americans without a hyphen. Thinking just about this issue myself, and thinking of my two children who married to a different ethnic rather than Samoans. These questions come to mind about this issue How, Why, and what the three words that needs a big explanation about this matter.According to multiracial Americans, Americans whose identity as two or more races identifies with hardly one group culturally and socially. From statistics that I got from online, stated that about 2.9% of the popu lation in the year 2010 are self-identified as multiracial. The identity or the classification of the peoples identification is generally according to the culture they were raised in.Social segregation in many areas of the country is forming interracial unions or cultural group. The miscellanea of social conditions through migrations brought new groups of people to the United States. Through these migrations, mixed races started to rise when interracial marriage were born and started to increase in the United States. The drift of multiracial identity by more than one ethnicity has taken place and strong.Statistics from the year 2010 census in the United States shows that the largest multiracial groups were white and black which is 1.8 million. The otherwise 1.7 millions are white and some other race, white and Asian is 1.6, white and American Indian and Alaskan Native is 1.4 million. I have learned that the largest development group in multiracial is white and black which is abou t 134%. That is more than 1 million people.MIX RACIAL AND CULTURAL GROUPAccording to Susan Saulny of the in the buff York Times, title Race Remixed, said that sea of change is how we think about race, ethnicity and its place in society. I study that a challenge to kink towards multiracial from a sociological perspective is a leap that we should take. The understanding of racial and ethnic categories of their boundaries can be a problem to other multiracial groups. I think that ancestry is the biggest influence in identities through a number of generations through migrations.I also believe that each multi mix or racial group should be treated the same regardless of their identity. If they are legally citizens of the United States, they have the right to be treated equally. I believe that they have contributed to the wellbeing and welfare of the United States through their services in employment within the government, military or private companies. Regardless of the race and ethnic ity, they should be treated and considered Americans. President Obama is good example of what I mean about treating them the same no matter what color of their skin or where they are from. I know that some of these mix race entities are trying to separate themselves with-in the United States but when they travel to other countries of the world, they considered be call Americans. As a citizen of New Zealand, I am proud to call myself to be an American and I respect the land that my children were born. What can the United States or these multiracial groups pull together from wanting to be separated from their identity. Through my search online, I came across Mrs. Karissa Sullivas draft and she said that ancestry influences identities. She said that socialization is the crucible of racial and ethnic identity formation.Farley in 2002, construct racial and ethnic classifications which was adopted by the government for each race or reconsidered themselves to either refuse to chance on th eir own race and ethnic category.MIX RACIAL AND CULTURAL GROUPI believe that mix racial and cultural groups are increasing effortless by the number throughout the United States. However, research shows that children with an original multiracial identity grow up to be happier than those of single-race identity. Some of the statistics shows that another addition to the growth of mix race is through adoption of children from countries outside of the United States.According to Facts for Families 2010, parents are coping with these pressures in having open communications with the families about their culture and race. Encouragement and support in every multicultural group for families to be familiar with their language, traditions and customs within their families. They have to support and try to sacrifice a good relationship by creating a network for their children, parents, family member, relatives and the community. In conclusion, the separation and classifications between mix racial and multicultural groups is not an easy chore or thing to do. Two of my children are married to different ethnic. My oldest daughter is married to an African American and my son is married to a girl who is graceful and white but has about four or five mix blood in her. I believe in democracy and the United States is nowhere in having a separation of any mix race and cultural group who are living in the United States. beau ideal Bless America, God bless the people of the United States.ReferencesPerez, Anthony Daniel, Hirschman, Charles. Paul Hindemith Sonata For Flute And Piano Film Studies Essay

Paul Hindemith Sonata For Flute And Piano Film Studies EssayJ.S.Bach Sonata in G minor, for flute and obbligato harpsichord. In a famous remark rough J.S.Bach, Beethoven said he should be named Sea instead of Bach, beca intake of his infinite, inexhaustible wealth in tone combinations and harmonies. These virtues are besides deployed in his flute sonatas, from each one with a unique melodic contour and character. Bach was often criticized for being abstruse and redundantly complex, only if he was able to prove through his work that he was, and would remain, a great pioneer. The special importance of his chamber music, in which he demonstrated a deep knowledge of the typical idioms and performing techniques of each instrument, was know at a very early age.Bach is generally described as a rather austere personality, but that may be the event of a lack of information complementing his character, deemed unfitting for archival storage. The first use of the transverse flute in Bachs w orks was in Cantata no 137a, performed in 1722, in Cthen for the birthday of Prince Leopold, with whom Bach maintained very good relations. Many momentous works, such as the first book of the well-tempered Clavier, cello suites and probably some of the flute sonatas (they are dated between 1720 and 1741), were also represent during the time he spent there, exploiting the qualities and extended experience attained at the Weimar court. It was a period when the transverse flute, technically more advanced, began gaining ground against its rival, the recorder, and when J.Quantz started making it widely famous. The flutists of that era seemed to manifest a departmenticular dexterity, equivalent to that, take non only in the flute sonatas, but also in other flute separate of many of the composers works, such as the cantatas and passions. In one of Bachs biographies, produce in 1802, by Forkel, the latter states that the flute sonatas even in our dayswould be heard by connoisseurs with pleasure. This particular work raises a controversial liberate about its paternity. Bachs authority regarding the composing started to become questioned during the third decade of the 20th century. Scholars expressed certainty that Bachs son, Carl Phillip Emmanuel, is the composer of this sonata (the dominant consensus today), but until today, no assumption has been unquestionably be and no explanation has been given as to why an aspiring composer like C.P.Emanuel would attribute this work to his father without any plausible reason. A recent study, by Keiichi Kubota, speculates that the g minor sonata is the result of a collaborative work between Bach and his son (the latter ascribing authority to his father). The sonata is played today by two violinists and flutists, as it is believed that the piece may experience been written initially for violin, as supported in many published articles. Its form is that of the Italian concerto, lively-slow-lively, which reminds the listener o f the significant influence of Vivaldi and Italian music to Bach.G.Faur Fantaisie pour flute et gently, op. 79Flute has always been associated with France, a relation that is firmly built upon the particular interest of cut composers and performers in this technically developed instrument, especially slightly the turn of the 19th century. Paris stood in the forefront of musical processes at the time, and served as an incubator for spic-and-span composers and performers, who formed the rising trends.Gabriel Faur, a composer, organist, pianist, choirmaster and teacher, is one of the most important French figures of the turn of the 20th century, characterized by Debussy as the master of charms. He was fortunate enough to be a student and later friend of Saint-Sans, at the Ecole Niedermeyer, where he was sent, after his father realized the unique talent of his son.His style, multi-faceted and resourceful, continued to spring up until the composers death, in 1924. For that reason, putting labels on Faurs music can never be precise. His artistic hallmark is regarded as the bridge between Romanticism and modernity and at the time of his death the second Viennese School was beginning to emerge. He was always self-critical (to the extent of discarding some of his already composed work) and pursued eternal productiveness. His harmonic and melodic creativeness paved the road for new musical trends and made his style an inextricable element of future teaching of harmony and composition.Faur composed the Fantaisie for flute and piano, in 1898, upon a commission from his friend and colleague, P.Taffanel, who was a professor at the Conservatoire of Paris, and to whom the piece is dedicated (later Faur would be appointed director of the Conservatoire). This piece was to be used for the annual introductory exams (Concours). Faur, being among the first composers to be commissioned for the morceau de concours, confessed to Saint-Sans in a letter, that this piece constit uted a real take exception for him. He sent it to Taffanel asking him to amend any parts that were not appropriate for the flute. Faur compound the Andante of the Fantaisie to his incidental music, performed in London for the Maeterlinks play, Pellas et Mlisande. This piece, which is dedicated to Taffanel, sets out to explore flutes full potential, by extending to all three registers, covering all of the Romantic instruments range. The performer is required to demonstrate wealth and miscellany in his expression and sound, in his effort to trace the unfolding melody. Observation of the piano part reveals the prominence of the instrument in Faurs mentality. It is perceived not merely as an accompanying instrument, but rather as an equal partner, contributing to the melodic and rhythmic development of the piece. Together with the flute they make use of an extensive expressional quiver, alternating staccatos with long legato phrases, as after a sicilienne-like introduction, an increas ing complexity in the instruments parts is combined with sudden dynamic changes.Fantasia also exists in an orchestral version. This was realized later, after the composer death, by Louis Aubert, in 1957, at the request of the prominent French flutist, Jean Pierre Rampal.Paul Hindemith sonata for flute and piano (1936)In Hindemiths opera Mathis der Mahler, Grnewald, a painter, realizes that he should never have betrayed his art for the sake of political activism. Hindemith though, never betrayed his versatile artistic personality and established a prominent career both as a performer and composer, demonstrating a manifold expressiveness. He aspired to create a new mentality in music, but not as an end in itself. The term Gebrauchsmusik (functional music) refers to his notion for music, which should be created to serve a purpose, because the days of composing only for the sake of composing were by chance gone forever. By drawing on multiple styles and forms he explored all aspects of resourcefulness and complexity. His activity was not restricted only to the production of music, but he also took up a dynamic role as a tutor which is colligated with his series of simple works for children and amateurs. His theoretical treatise Unterweisung im Tonsatz, sets the basis for a new approach towards harmony and melodic shaping and the views expressed would influence the next generations of composers.Hindemith lived in an era of political turmoil and his revolutionary style could not have evaded Nazis attention, who deemed his music as Gbbels put it pure noise-making. Although Hindemith was naive enough to ignore (at the beginning at least) the Nazi threat, his sonata for flute and piano, composed in 1936, has incorporated this aspect, yielding a work that alludes to this sinister political environment and asserting the composers belief that an artist cannot remain untouched by the human suffering around him.The flute sonata was composed at a time of an increasing awar eness by Hindemith of the looming danger and the subsequent need to flee his country. His emotional disposition is adumbrated in the second movement which conveys a suffering through its recitativo-like melody of the flute. One cannot fail to notice the fine irony emanating from the sonatas strict rhythmic form which dissolves into a childish-like melody, projecting the image of a child imitating a soldiers march. Hindemith, tried to capture the vanity of human arrogance in conjunction with the suffering and desperation. The flutist is required to render a wide palette of colors and emotions, from triumphant marches to bleak moments of agony and melancholy, by extending to the full range of the instrument. The piano has an emancipated part in the sonata and continuously moves in a contrapuntal way against the flute, hence sometimes its preferred with its lid open. The boundaries between minor and major chords and atonal parts become blurred, much as the boundaries between life and dea th at the time of the composition, the death which Hindemith eluded only by chance in multiple occasions.
